About this game

Collection of Mana gathers Final Fantasy Adventure, also known as Mystic Quest, Secret of Mana and the original Trials of Mana. In the first adventure, weapons do more than defeat monsters: they clear vegetation and help you cross gaps. Leveling also lets you direct character growth by choosing a development type. Trials of Mana shifts attention toward party composition. Choose three characters from six candidates, with the combination affecting the story, then guide their development through light or dark class changes. Local multiplayer is available in Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana, with different player limits. The collection retains pixel-art presentation and provides quicksaves, though loading an older snapshot also restores the ordinary saves contained within it.

8.5 / 10Nintendo Switch

A collection for players curious about different forms of early action-RPG decision-making.

Weapon-based exploration in the first game and party-driven storytelling in Trials of Mana give the collection contrasting points of interest. It should suit players who enjoy moving between distinct adventures and shaping character development rather than expecting one uniform ruleset.

Strengths

  • The first game's practical weapon uses and the third game's party and class choices offer different kinds of player agency.
  • Local multiplayer in Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana provides a way to share those particular adventures.

Who it is for: Players interested in pixel-art RPGs, choosing character growth paths and comparing the early Mana games.

Play notes: An older quicksave can restore older ordinary save data as well. In Trials of Mana, resume with Quickload after a quicksave, or load the latest ordinary save after saving normally.

With three included games, the collection is better approached as several adventures with their own goals than as one continuous campaign.

Quicksaves offer another way to preserve a session, but their inclusion of ordinary saves makes choosing the correct load method important.
