About this game
El Shaddai - Ascension of the Metatron is a PlayStation 3 action game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and area and route exploration. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hits, camera behavior, and readable hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while HD 3D scenes, Blu-ray data streaming, surround audio, and cinematic presentation need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera behavior, collision rules, input mapping, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. Platform conditions also include Blu-ray loading, HDD installs, system software, DualShock 3 battery life, Move accessories, resolution and frame rate, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Extraordinary art elevates a compact action journey.
The European PS3 release of El Shaddai sends Enoch up a tower of fallen angels, shifting between three-dimensional arenas and side-view platforming. Jump, guard and attack are simple inputs, but the timing of pauses between strikes and the need to steal one of three weapons from enemies create meaningful matchup decisions. This is a more thoughtful combat loop than its small button set first suggests. Every angel gives a level its own visual language. Watercolour corridors, carnival colours and other abrupt stylistic changes make the journey unusually memorable, even when the story presents its ideas cryptically. Its ordinary combat arenas do not always match that artistic ambition, and encounters that cannot be won weaken the payoff of learning a boss. The direct PS3 review also identifies Lucifel as both guide and save point, making progression legible. It does not document a measured frame rate, so this assessment makes no numerical performance claim. Players seeking a distinctive visual adventure with accessible but timed combat should find a great deal to admire. Those wanting every fight to reward mastery equally will meet clear limitations.
Strengths
- Weapon matchups and constantly changing stage art.
Weaknesses
- Ordinary arenas and unwinnable encounters.
Who it is for: Players drawn to strange art and timing-based action.
Play notes: The 2011 European PS3 review does not establish frame rate or later-port behavior.
