About this game
Earth Defense Force 2017 is a Xbox 360 shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and resource or business management. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while HD video, DVD streaming, surround audio, HDD installs, and television-distance interfaces need to keep action, state, and text readable. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include disc and HDD installation, storage devices, controller batteries, video connections, resolution and frame rate, Kinect space and calibration, and retired online services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.
Collected in series
Earth Defense Force is a mission-based action-shooter series that makes its soldiers look tiny beside the invasion they face. Giant creatures, alien forces and outsized weapons fill the screen, with later games and spin-offs exploring different combat roles and squad combinations.

Irresistible B-movie chaos with rough original hardware execution.
The appeal of Earth Defense Force 2017 on Xbox 360 is wonderfully direct: take two weapons into a city full of giant insects and flying saucers, then watch explosions and collapsing buildings turn the battlefield into chaos. More than 150 random weapon unlocks make loadout experiments tempting, and fifty-three missions work well as short bursts. Local cooperative play amplifies the B-movie spectacle. Costs are just as obvious. Terrain and enemy models recur, random drops invite repeated grinding, and characters, vehicles and physics look crude. A direct review of the original Xbox 360 release even records occasional freezes when the screen becomes crowded, along with awkward vehicle controls. Brass music and earnestly wooden dialogue fit the cheap monster-film mood, though charm is not a substitute for technical polish. This score does not import improvements from later ports or sequels, nor confuse the game with an unrelated Super Famicom shooter of a similar name. Players who like chaotic cooperative bug hunts will find real pleasure here. Those demanding smooth, refined production should be cautious.
Strengths
- Weapon variety, local co-op and huge battles.
Weaknesses
- Reused assets, poor vehicle handling and occasional freezes.
Who it is for: Co-op shooter fans tolerant of rough production.
Play notes: The original Xbox 360 release, not the SFC game or later port.
