About this game

Dark Souls II follows a cursed traveller into Drangleic, a kingdom rumoured to hold a way to break the undead curse. The pilgrimage begins in Majula and leads towards powerful souls. Progress involves observing enemies and managing stamina between attacks, evasion and defence. Weapons and character development offer different approaches, while bonfires provide places to regroup. Dangerous exploration, new routes and renewed attempts against strong opponents form the rhythm of the journey.

Dark Souls 2

Exploration and builds reward study, while hit detection and PS3 performance temper the challenge.

Stamina gives every attack, evasion and block a cost, while weapon moves and power stance turn practice into different fighting styles. Attribute redistribution leaves room to reconsider a build rather than abandoning it outright. Bonfire travel reduces repeated journeys without removing the pressure of dangerous exploration and recovering lost souls. The challenge is less convincing when an apparently successful dodge still takes a hit: those reported moments make failure harder to interpret. Rough textures and slowdown also interrupt the PS3 experience. Clear equipment weights, requirements and help text aid learning, although the initially stiff handling needs adjustment. This is a rewarding choice for players prepared to observe opponents, retry encounters and gradually shape a character. The judgment covers single-player content; the discontinued old-console online service contributes no present-day benefit.

Strengths

  • Weapons and builds support different approaches
  • Exploration and recovery retain tension

Weaknesses

  • Some hits are difficult to interpret
  • PS3 slowdown and rough textures

Who it is for: Action-RPG players willing to observe, practise and experiment with builds.

Play notes: Independent judgment from Nathan Michalik’s March 11, 2014 PS3 test, not our own playtest. Model, patch and hours are unspecified; slowdown is not a measured benchmark. FromSoftware lists PS3 online service as ended on March 31, 2024. Scholar changes and DLC are excluded.

Bonfire travel, varied weapons and attribute redistribution support different builds and renewed attempts. Recovering lost souls gives experimentation a cost, rewarding players willing to learn through repeated journeys.

Stamina makes attack, defence and evasion compete for resources, with weapon moves and power stance supporting different approaches. Reported hits after apparent dodges sometimes weaken the fairness of that discipline.

Lighting and particle effects give the journey atmosphere, but rough textures in the PS3 account expose uneven detail. The visual identity supports exploration more consistently than close-up surface quality.

Readable equipment weights, requirements and help text make build decisions easier in the PS3 review. Slowdown and initially stiff handling still interrupt the consistency demanded by high-pressure fights.
