About this game

City Connection is a downloadable legacy action release for Wii U centered on platform movement and landing judgment, area and route exploration, and movement and immediate actions. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hits, camera behavior, and readable hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while the original aspect ratio, scaling, filtering, sound, and television output need to preserve key information and the source game's style. The genre-specific limitation is that camera behavior, collision rules, input mapping, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. Platform conditions also include control mapping, display ratio, emulation behavior, saving, controller compatibility, and the retired download service affect present-day use. The downloadable legacy release is judged for emulation behavior, control mapping, and retained conveniences rather than inheriting the original media score.

5.2 / 10Wii U

A neat road-painting premise with unforgiving reissue controls.

The Wii U Virtual Console release of City Connection presents the Western NES version. Its car must paint every stretch of road across stacked platforms, jumping sideways or upward while avoiding police, cats and spikes. That clear-the-map goal has a compact arcade puzzle rhythm. Seven cities do not provide a long journey, though difficult jumps, sudden obstacles and the absence of a continue option can make complete runs repetitive. The direct Wii U review finds steering and jump timing awkward even on this reissue, with some landings demanding nearly pixel-perfect precision. Each city has a tune, but the loops are short and wear thin. The Western NES variant also replaces the Japanese driver Clarice with an unnamed man; the two regional identities should not be conflated. This score concerns the NES game as directly reviewed on Wii U in 2016, not the protected Famicom score or a new native Wii U game. No unverified save-state feature is assumed. It mainly suits players interested in practising old arcade routes.

Strengths

  • Stacked road routes and brief city challenges.

Weaknesses

  • Exacting jumps, no continue and looping tunes.

Who it is for: Players keen to master old arcade routes.

Play notes: Western NES reissue on Wii U, not the Japanese Famicom variant.
