About this game

Borderlands 3 Ultimate Edition combines shooting, looting and character building. Choose a Vault Hunter with distinct abilities, develop a skill tree and fight enemies to obtain new weapons and equipment. Some guns even grow legs and chase targets. The adventure takes you beyond Pandora through deserts, war-torn cities and bayous as you confront cult leaders threatening your home. This edition includes the base game, its six content add-ons and bonus cosmetic packs. The included Designer's Cut provides an additional skill tree for each Vault Hunter and the Arms Race mode. On Switch, you can play alone or with a second player through local wireless or online play. Single-console play is for one player; co-op is not a shared-console split-screen option.

7.9 / 10Nintendo Switch

A fit for players who want new loot to keep feeding their character-building decisions.

Distinct Vault Hunters and skill trees give the equipment chase a framework for experimentation. The bundled add-ons broaden the available material, while Switch's separate-console co-op arrangement matters if playing together is central to your plans.

Strengths

  • Loot and customizable skill trees can support repeated decisions about how a character should fight.
  • The bundled content adds both an extra skill tree per Vault Hunter and another mode to explore.

Weaknesses

  • The single-console player limit makes this edition unsuitable for a shared-screen co-op setup.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy shooting enemies, comparing equipment and developing a character build, alone or with a friend on separate systems.

Play notes: Local co-op uses wireless play across consoles. Online co-op requires an internet connection and Nintendo Switch Online.

The base adventure and bundled add-ons provide several content strands, so players who like exploring a collection of activities may find more to engage with than those seeking a single narrow campaign.

Finding equipment against a backdrop of distinct abilities and skill trees could make changing a build as compelling as acquiring another gun.

Enemy-chasing guns and the move between deserts, cities and bayous suggest a deliberately extravagant adventure for players who enjoy unusual weapons and changing scenery.

The distinction between one-player single-console play and two-player wireless or online play is decisive when planning a co-op session.
