About this game

AFL Premiership 2006 is a PlayStation 2 sports game centered on sport controls, shifts between attack and defense, and score or tournament goals. Matches, challenges, and tournament goals give sessions clear boundaries, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Players, venues, animation, and score feedback establish the match atmosphere, while 3D scenes, streamed data, cinematics, surround audio, and interlaced television output need to preserve action and state readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that opponent ai, control precision, multiplayer accessories, and period-specific rosters can affect consistency. Platform conditions also include DVD loading, the 8MB Memory Card, analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons, Multitap, Network Adapter, dedicated peripherals, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Substantial career management, persistently awkward PS2 play.

AFL Premiership 2006 is strongest away from the immediate match. Its multi-season career lets you manage all sixteen clubs, develop players with earned points, trade after the finals, and draft new talent. Historical missions briefly vary the schedule. Tackles connect more convincingly than in the preceding game, yet passing and kicking direction are too sensitive to small movements of the PS2 analog stick. A slight overshoot can send the ball away from its intended line. Players recover slowly from bumps and missed tackles, while the sliding goal meter makes a promising shot wait for the right moment. Training is rudimentary and each club receives only one historical mission, so these diversions cannot fully relieve the long campaign. Blocky player models and jerky animation do little justice to the licensed roster. Committed Australian football fans may still enjoy the management depth, but anyone seeking fluid on-field control should account for the persistent friction.

Strengths

  • Trades, drafts and development sustain a long career.

Weaknesses

  • Over-sensitive passing, slow recovery and crude models.

Who it is for: Australian football fans who value team management.

Play notes: Based on a 2006 PS2 review; later patches and compatibility unverified.
