About this game

Watch Dogs is a Wii U shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, area and route exploration, and aiming and shooting. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while HD television output and the GamePad screen need to divide maps, status, touch input, and primary focus clearly. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and multiplayer service conditions can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include GamePad battery life and range, shifts between two screens, loading, performance, and retired online and Miiverse services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

Enjoyable hacking stealth meets severe Wii U driving slowdown.

Watch Dogs on Wii U turns a substantial recreation of Chicago into a network to infiltrate. Moving from security camera to security camera, profiling passers-by and triggering environmental traps make stealth more distinctive than the routine cover shooting or mandatory firefights. Suburbs, docks and downtown offer considerable space, and a campaign, ctOS sites and crime interruptions keep the map busy. Those activities soon repeat, however, while the reputation gauge has little dramatic meaning and Aiden is a muted lead. The direct Wii U review found movement on foot tolerable, although rain and crowded scenes could slow it. Driving was markedly worse: frame-rate drops made handling sluggish during chases and escapes that the campaign cannot avoid. A useful GamePad map and off-TV play do not develop the second-screen hacking idea very far, and the reviewer noted occasional audio-balance issues. The open-world experiment can still entertain, but this late port exacts a heavy technical price. Period coverage of online invasions is not evidence that the service remains available now.

Strengths

  • Camera infiltration, city exploration and traps create identity.

Weaknesses

  • Repetition and sluggish driving damage essential chase missions.

Who it is for: Wii U open-world players willing to accept major performance issues.

Play notes: The 2014 online feature report does not verify present-day service.
