About this game

Triangle Strategy is a tactical role-playing game about political conflict and conviction. Three powers compete over resources and influence in Norzelia, drawing Serenoa and his companions into decisions about survival and responsibility. Pixel characters and three-dimensional scenery present the settlements, battlefields and people involved. Turn-based encounters ask players to arrange positions and character abilities. Important decisions also go to a vote through the Scales of Conviction. Exploring towns and talking to residents can reveal information useful for persuading companions. Choices affect story branches and potential allies, connecting investigation and conversation with the decisions made on the battlefield.

TRIANGLE STRATEGY

Tactical choices gain weight from a political structure that asks players to persuade companions as well as command them.

Its strongest idea is that being the leader does not make every important decision yours alone. Gathering information and persuading companions gives conversation a purpose beyond delivering the next plot point, while the vote creates a boundary between personal preference and collective action. Battles then give the consequences a different form, asking how a group’s abilities and positions should be arranged. The connection is appealing for players who want a campaign to involve more than a sequence of encounters. It also asks for patience with a substantial amount of dialogue between those encounters. The PC version’s inspected settings and keyboard support make the tactical interface approachable, but this is chiefly a different way to experience the same adventure rather than a redesign of its pacing. Players who enjoy following political arguments as closely as combat options will get more from that balance.

Strengths

  • Persuasion, voting and tactical deployment make leadership involve different kinds of decisions.

Weaknesses

  • Lengthy conversations can delay the next opportunity to test a tactical plan.

Who it is for: Players who want political choices alongside a turn-based tactical campaign.
