About this game

Jagged Alliance 2 is a PC role-playing game centered on area exploration, combat and party setup, and character progression. Story beats, exploration, and progression resources support a longer campaign, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Characters, world building, environments, and music carry most of the atmosphere, while resolution, graphics settings, frame rate, aspect ratio, audio, text scaling, and hardware performance need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that dense text, menu layers, repeated battles, loading, or language dependence can slow progress. Platform conditions also include OS and hardware requirements, installation media, patches, drivers, DRM and launchers, key binding and controller support, save locations, mod compatibility, servers, and era-specific OS compatibility affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

8.2 / 10Windows PC

Rich mercenary tactics with a harsh endgame and weak sight feedback.

The original 1999 Windows PC release of Jagged Alliance 2 gives its mercenary personalities genuine tactical purpose. Every firefight asks players to budget action points for movement, stance, shots and other tasks, while rooftops, cover and different weapons offer several ways to take a sector. Exploration moves in real time when enemies are absent, keeping movement from becoming a chain of empty turns. The wider campaign links these battles to capturing towns, training militia, paying recruits and meeting optional characters, making different routes worth trying. Its final city, however, brings a steep difficulty jump that both contemporary reviews found disruptive. Detailed 2D terrain, destructible scenery, varied animations and mercenary voices make the battlefield memorable, despite repeated tiles and death sequences. On the original PC version, the interface gives poor feedback about visible range, and small cover objects can be obscured by the isometric view. One contemporary reviewer also reported an occasional crash while exiting to Windows. This assessment does not extend to Wildfire, community modifications, modern operating systems or later storefront builds.

Strengths

  • Action-point tactics, campaign choice and mercenary personality reinforce each other.

Weaknesses

  • The endgame spikes sharply, and original sightline feedback is unclear.

Who it is for: Turn-based tacticians who enjoy squad management and resource planning.

Play notes: Covers the original PC release, not later builds or modern compatibility.
