About this game

Tomb Raider - Anniversary is a PlayStation 2 shooter game centered on puzzle, maze, or device solving, area and route exploration, and story, case, or mission progress. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while 3D scenes, streamed data, cinematics, surround audio, and interlaced television output need to preserve action and state readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include DVD loading, the 8MB Memory Card, analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons, Multitap, Network Adapter, dedicated peripherals, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

A strong reconstruction built around spatial puzzles, with PS2 reloads raising the cost of failure.

Anniversary connects observation with execution. Understanding a chamber and then linking jumps, climbs and swings into a route makes reaching a destination feel earned. Exploration is the main attraction; constant gunfire is not its driving force. Hidden objects reward attention, although missed mechanisms and repeated mistakes can send players over the same route again. Restrained music and environmental sound preserve the feeling of entering ruins alone. On PS2, rough image edges and long reloads after death make the experience less polished, while occasional camera changes interfere with intended movement. The result remains a substantial climbing and puzzle adventure for patient players. This assessment covers the original 2007 PS2 implementation, without additional content from other versions.

Strengths

  • Strong connection between spatial reasoning and movement
  • Convincing scale and solitude

Weaknesses

  • Retries and backtracking weigh on pacing
  • PS2 death reloads and occasional camera interference

Who it is for: Action-adventure players who enjoy environmental puzzles, climbing and secrets.

Play notes: Historical 2007 PS2 original; excludes Wii additions and later emulation features.
