About this game

Beyond Good & Evil is a PlayStation 2 shooter game centered on puzzle, maze, or device solving, aiming and shooting, and positioning and evasion. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while 3D scenes, streamed data, cinematics, surround audio, and interlaced television output need to preserve action and state readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include DVD loading, the 8MB Memory Card, analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons, Multitap, Network Adapter, dedicated peripherals, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

A vivid investigative adventure with a brief finish.

The 2003 PlayStation 2 Beyond Good & Evil makes Jade’s camera central to the adventure. Photographing wildlife earns money, while images of the Alpha Sections and the alien threat become evidence in a political investigation. Partner puzzles, guarded-base infiltration, simple staff combat and an upgradeable hovercraft give the reporting journey different rhythms. The direct contemporary PS2 review finds the puzzles varied and stealth generally well placed. It also describes the hovercraft as precise to drive and companion AI as helpful without frequent technical interference. Combat is straightforward rather than especially deep. Across a journey the reviewer estimates at roughly fifteen hours, new areas and transport upgrades keep travel lively; the ending still arrives sooner than expected and repeated stealth becomes noticeable. Detailed Hillys exteriors, stylised inhabitants, professional voice work and music that shifts from introspection to strange rock make the conspiracy feel rooted in a lived-in world. This assessment concerns the original PS2 edition. The protected Xbox sibling and separately listed PlayStation 3 HD rerelease are not treated as technically identical, nor is the source’s numeric rating imported into the judgment.

Strengths

  • Photography, partner puzzles and Hillys work together.

Weaknesses

  • Simple combat, repeated stealth and an early ending.

Who it is for: Adventure players drawn to photography and investigation.

Play notes: Original PS2 only; Xbox and PS3 HD separate.
