About this game

Sonic Frontiers sends Sonic across the Starfall Islands in search of his separated friends. Its open zones place traversal challenges, battles, puzzles and side quests around the landscape, letting you decide which activity to approach. Solving island puzzles can reveal the map and new routes, while entrances to Cyber Space lead into high-speed stages whose completion provides keys for further progress. Combat combines dodges, parries, counters and combos, with skill-tree upgrades adding to Sonic's repertoire. Cyloop turns movement into another action: run a loop around a target to trigger an effect based on what you enclose. Forests, waterfalls and desert landscapes frame the journey between island exploration and the more focused Cyber Space challenges.

Collected in series

Sonic the Hedgehog is SEGA’s action franchise starring its speedy blue hero. Running, jumping and learning the terrain connect adventures that range from side-scrolling courses to 3D stages and open islands, with different entries giving speed and exploration their own balance.

7.4 / 10Nintendo Switch

An exploratory take on Sonic for players who enjoy choosing the next challenge between speed stages.

Open zones could make movement feel exploratory because puzzles reveal routes and Cyloop gives a running path an additional purpose. Cyber Space supplies a more focused stage structure, while battles ask for attention to defensive actions as well as combos.

Strengths

  • Cyloop could make route drawing useful beyond simply reaching a destination.
  • Open-zone activities and Cyber Space stages offer different ways to focus on Sonic's movement.

Weaknesses

  • Players seeking continuous speed stages may find the switches to puzzles and combat less appealing.

Who it is for: Players interested in fast traversal who also enjoy exploring, solving environmental tasks and learning combat actions.
