About this game
Resident Evil 2 - Dual Shock Ver. is a PlayStation shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and story, case, or mission progress. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while early 3D graphics, pre-rendered backgrounds, CD audio, and full-motion video need to preserve targets and interface readability on a television. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include disc loading, Memory Card saves, regional video standards, digital or analog control support, vibration, and dedicated peripherals affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A strong PlayStation revision whose extra challenge mode matters more than its controller label.
This score concerns the original PlayStation Dual Shock edition of Resident Evil 2, not the 2019 remake. Leon and Claire's linked A and B scenarios remain its strongest feature: different routes and scarce ammunition make exploration consequential. The edition keeps the original story, imagery and voices, then adds analog and vibration support. Arrange mode gives newcomers a forgiving entry, although its powerful starting equipment weakens the survival tension that defines the main game. The more valuable addition for returning players is Extreme Battle, unlocked after a paired campaign completion. Its objective-driven trip through familiar locations, escalating difficulty and additional characters create another reason to learn safe routes and manage supplies. This is meaningful replay content rather than a purely cosmetic revision. Its fixed cameras, old-fashioned movement and uneven performances have not been redesigned, so controller support should not be mistaken for modern handling. Still, the underlying two-character horror design is excellent, and the bonus mode makes this a particularly substantial way to revisit the original PlayStation game.
Strengths
- Interlocking character scenarios
- Substantial unlockable challenge mode
- Analog and vibration support
Weaknesses
- Dated movement and aiming
- Aged acting and visuals
- Easy mode reduces tension
Who it is for: Survival-horror players interested in the original game and its bonus challenge.
Play notes: Only the original PS1 Dual Shock release is scored; Extreme Battle must be unlocked.
