About this game
Quake is a Nintendo 64 shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, puzzle, maze, or device solving, and aiming and shooting. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while 3D scenes, fog, textures, and cartridge audio need to preserve target readability within limited memory and television output. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and multiplayer service conditions can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include camera control, stick precision, Controller Pak saves, Rumble Pak support, Expansion Pak requirements, and four-player setup can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

Nintendo 64AI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A compelling atmospheric console shooter, best approached as a solo campaign.
Entering a stone corridor, spotting a monster lunging from darkness and retreating while lining up a shot remains wonderfully tense. Keys, switches and hidden areas break up the fighting with exploration, while subdued music and strange creatures maintain an unsettling mood. The N64 cartridge is not a complete replacement for the original, however. Some levels are missing, and deathmatch is limited to two people without bots, leaving larger arenas unusually empty. Adjustable buttons, sensitivity and aiming options help you build a workable control scheme, but vertical aiming still takes practice. Default texture filtering blurs nearby surfaces; switching it off improves clarity, while strong colored lighting remains a matter of taste. Enjoy its secret-filled solo journey rather than expecting a lasting multiplayer centerpiece.
Strengths
- Tense encounters and traps
- Secrets and environmental exploration
- Sombre music and dungeon atmosphere
Weaknesses
- Some original levels are missing
- Two-player deathmatch without bots
- Tricky vertical aiming and default blur
Who it is for: Players who enjoy old-school dungeon shooting and solo exploration.
Play notes: This assesses the original N64 cartridge, not the remaster add-on; adjust filtering and controls before playing.
