About this game

Doom 64 is a Nintendo 64 shooter game centered on aiming and shooting, positioning and evasion, and weapon and firepower management. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while 3D scenes, fog, textures, and cartridge audio need to preserve target readability within limited memory and television output. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and multiplayer service conditions can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include camera control, stick precision, Controller Pak saves, Rumble Pak support, Expansion Pak requirements, and four-player setup can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

8.0 / 10Nintendo 64

A distinctive, atmospheric N64 campaign with control friction.

The original Nintendo 64 Doom 64 is a distinct campaign rather than reduced copies of the PC maps. New stages, shifting enemies and a broad arsenal refresh the familiar rhythm of collecting keys, clearing demons and finding exits. More vertical spaces and hidden routes reward investigation, while colored lighting and sparse industrial ambience turn the mood toward horror. Some large layouts can leave players lost, and extremely dark rooms sometimes hide useful information as well as create tension. A firsthand account of the original cartridge also describes an awkward single-stick layout at first, without free vertical looking or jumping. Combat becomes workable after adjustment, but convenience from later dual-stick ports should not be credited to this edition. This rating covers the 1997 N64 content alone, excluding extra material and settings from rereleases. It suits retro shooter players who enjoy exploring intricate maps and can tolerate an initial control-learning period.

Strengths

  • New maps, secrets, progression and strong ambience.

Weaknesses

  • Very dark rooms, occasional confusion and dated input.

Who it is for: Retro shooter players who enjoy map exploration.

Play notes: Only the 1997 N64 cartridge is assessed.
