About this game
Half-Life is a PlayStation 2 shooter game centered on story, case, or mission progress, aiming and shooting, and positioning and evasion. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while 3D scenes, streamed data, cinematics, surround audio, and interlaced television output need to preserve action and state readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include DVD loading, the 8MB Memory Card, analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons, Multitap, Network Adapter, dedicated peripherals, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

A strong PS2 port with useful but demanding extras.
The PlayStation 2 Half-Life preserves the essential trip through Black Mesa. Carefully staged discoveries lead into firefights against soldiers who take cover and throw grenades, while environmental puzzles break up the shooting without dissolving its tension. Improved textures and character models make this port clearer, and distinctive sound effects remain crucial to the facility’s threatening atmosphere. Some geometry shows its age, but the encounters are readable. This edition is more than a bare transfer: it adds the two-player Decay campaign and split-screen deathmatch. Decay is less elegant alone, because one player must switch between two scientists, and saves are unavailable inside its missions, increasing the cost of failure. A direct PS2 review also confirms comfortable controller lock-on and optional USB keyboard and mouse input. The score belongs to this console port, not later PC patches or the cancelled Dreamcast build. Players who accept older save rules can still enjoy strong level and enemy design.
Strengths
- Enemy behavior, pacing and Decay cooperation.
Weaknesses
- Awkward solo Decay switching and mission restarts.
Who it is for: Shooter fans who value puzzles and atmosphere.
Play notes: PS2 edition only; Decay has no mid-mission save.
