About this game

Great Greed is a Game Boy role-playing release centered on combat encounters, turn-based tactical decisions, and area exploration. Story beats, exploration, and progression resources support a longer campaign, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on campaign length or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Characters, world building, maps, and music carry most of the atmosphere, while silhouettes, contrast, and audio cues need to remain clear on the monochrome display. The main genre-specific friction is that dense text, menu layers, repeated battles, and language dependence can slow progress. In addition, password or battery saves, link-cable requirements, display blur, manual dependence, and regional language can affect use of the original cartridge today. This description covers only this release and excludes emulator features, modern-port conveniences, and content from other platforms.

7.6 / 10Game Boy (GB)

Inventive active battles with a rough late difficulty rise.

Great Greed gives the original Game Boy an unusually active RPG battle scheme. A attacks, B dodges, and directions call up assigned spells while enemies continue acting, so preparation and immediate reactions both matter. Helpers and changing circumstances add tactics beyond repeating a single command. Its environmental satire, food-named characters and occasional surprising turns make the journey memorable. Town and overworld tiles are relatively ordinary, though battle sprites carry more detail. Puzzles break up encounters, but a few restrictive situations feel awkward, and the late boss difficulty rises sharply. The cartridge’s direct button mapping makes good use of the Game Boy’s limited inputs, while small inventory space remains a practical inconvenience. This is a favorable assessment of a distinctive portable RPG, not a conversion of the enthusiastic source review’s numeric grade. It applies to the original English Game Boy release described in the sources and excludes modern emulator saves, display filters or other conveniences.

Strengths

  • Direct-action combat and unusual environmental satire.

Weaknesses

  • Plain locations, late challenge and limited inventory.

Who it is for: Players seeking an unusual early handheld RPG.

Play notes: Original GB cartridge only; emulator aids excluded.
