About this game
FIFA 06 is a PSP sports game centered on competitive sport controls, sport controls, and shifts between attack and defense. Matches, challenges, and tournament goals give sessions clear boundaries, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Players, venues, animation, and score feedback establish the match atmosphere, while the portable widescreen, UMD streaming, compressed audio, and handheld-scale interface need to preserve targets, text, and action readability. The genre-specific limitation is that opponent ai, control precision, multiplayer accessories, and period-specific rosters can affect consistency. Platform conditions also include single-nub camera control, UMD loading and noise, Memory Stick saves, battery life, regional language, ad hoc requirements, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.
Collected in series
FIFA is EA SPORTS’ football series built around passing moves, defensive decisions and the excitement of scoring. Across its history, careers, Ultimate Team and women’s football broadened the experience beyond individual matches.

A strong portable football game whose main omission is career management.
The PSP version of FIFA 06 is more than a reduced copy of the home-console game. First-touch moves now use a trigger with the analog stick, while the D-pad can change attacking and defending plans during play. That mapping makes passing, forward runs and tackling easier to manage on a handheld with one stick. Quick matches, a season, tournaments, forty situational challenges and a separate juggling diversion give both brief and extended sessions a purpose. Licensed music and believable movement help the portable game feel like a football event, but period critics disagreed over the visual finish. Rough close-ups, ghosting and tiny players from a wide camera can make the action harder to read. The important omission is the console career mode: players looking for transfers and sustained club management will find less to build toward. The controls also cannot be remapped. At launch, local ad hoc and infrastructure matches were supported; period testing found the former smooth but reported sparse matchmaking for the latter. Current EA online availability is not verified, so this evaluation rests chiefly on the enduring offline game and documented original design.
Strengths
- Reworked first-touch and tactical controls fit the PSP's single analog stick.
- Season, tournaments, challenges and juggling suit several session lengths.
- Licensed music and believable movement enrich the portable match atmosphere.
Weaknesses
- The console career-management mode is absent.
- Fixed controls and occasional ball visibility issues reduce usability.
Who it is for: Portable football fans who value immediate matches and seasonal challenges more than deep club management.
Play notes: Historical online support must not be mistaken for a verified currently operating EA service.
