About this game

FIFA 23 is a PlayStation 5 sports game centered on sport controls, shifts between attack and defense, and score or tournament goals. Matches, challenges, and tournament goals give sessions clear boundaries, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Players, venues, animation, and score feedback establish the match atmosphere, while SSD streaming, 4K and HDR output, 3D audio, performance or quality modes, and high-density interfaces need to preserve feedback and information clarity together. The genre-specific limitation is that opponent ai, control precision, multiplayer accessories, and period-specific rosters can affect consistency. Platform conditions also include install size, SSD space, patch version, DualSense battery life, visual mode and frame rate, online dependencies, PS VR2 requirements, and cross-generation version differences affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Deliberate offline football remains, but online services have ended.

FIFA 23 makes passing, positioning and tackling matter more than another sprint toward goal. The slower rhythm creates useful decisions in ordinary matches, and risky tackles can change possession. The theatrical Power Shot and occasional strange collisions sit less comfortably with that physical direction. Additional animation and a broader selection of licensed women’s clubs strengthen the sport’s identity. Career retains a familiar structure despite new scenes and light player systems, while the cited PS5 launch test found useful information buried in menus. EA now lists FIFA 23 on PlayStation 5 under its October 30, 2025 online-service shutdown. The old review’s Ultimate Team, cross-play and matchmaking descriptions must therefore not be read as current features. This score concerns the surviving offline matches and career, with technical usability also reflecting the loss of online functionality.

Strengths

  • Passing and tackling create consequential match decisions.
  • Animation and club representation give the sport stronger identity.

Weaknesses

  • Career advances modestly and its menus add friction.
  • Online-service retirement narrows the available package.

Who it is for: Football players who value measured offline matches and do not need online competition.

Play notes: EA lists PS5 FIFA 23 under its October 30, 2025 online-service shutdown; this assessment concerns offline play.

Career and small-sided options provide breadth, but modest changes and the menu-heavy sequence of short Moments challenges weaken sustained progression.

Slower passing and riskier tackling give possession and timing more weight, although the pronounced Power Shot animation pulls against that grounded feel.
