About this game
Dynasty Wars is a 街机 action game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and story, case, or mission progress. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hits, camera behavior, and readable hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while period CRT or cabinet displays, horizontal or vertical orientation, pixel and sprite proportions, audio, and cabinet viewing distance need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera behavior, collision rules, input mapping, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. Platform conditions also include coin and continue rules, operator difficulty settings, control-panel condition, screen orientation, board and regional revisions, linked cabinets, and hardware maintenance affect the present-day experience. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.
Collected in series
Tenchi wo Kurau brings Hiroshi Motomiya’s Three Kingdoms manga into Capcom games with two distinct approaches. Its role-playing adventures ask you to build an army and choose battle commands, while the arcade branch puts weapons, throws and crowds of soldiers directly under your control.

A distinctive but repetitive early mounted brawler.
The 1989 arcade Dynasty Wars keeps its Three Kingdoms heroes on horseback. Left- and right-facing attacks, a charge move and life-consuming specials make its scrolling battles feel different from an ordinary on-foot brawler. Experience drops and weapon upgrades add a modest growth loop across eight stages. Manga-styled portraits, voice samples and moving backdrops establish an identity, although the fighters are small and the large interface leaves a cramped active playfield. Soldier types repeat, bosses offer limited variation, and late damage works hand in hand with the coin-fed survival model. These shortcomings make a full run less satisfying than the historical concept sounds. This assessment concerns the original Capcom arcade game, not Warriors of Fate or later home conversions. It is worthwhile for fans of arcade history and Three Kingdoms action who want to see an early experiment. Players seeking the more developed combat of Capcom’s later beat-em-ups should expect a simpler and harsher prototype.
Strengths
- Mounted combat, light progression and manga atmosphere.
Weaknesses
- Repeated troops, cramped screen and coin pressure.
Who it is for: Arcade-history and Three Kingdoms action fans.
Play notes: The 1989 arcade game, not Warriors of Fate.
