About this game

Digimon Story Time Stranger is an RPG built around monster raising and turn-based battles. Investigating anomalies takes the player between past and future, the human world and Digital World: Iliad, in search of the truth behind an approaching collapse. Digimon encountered along the way can be evolved, de-evolved and customised, with their abilities and attributes informing party composition. Distinct regions of the Digital World provide new meetings as exploration and story progress. Raising routes and battle choices are connected, allowing a familiar partner to grow in different directions.

Digimon Story Time Stranger

Deep partner growth is compelling, but the guided structure does not always give it room.

The most rewarding activity is planning what a partner could become. Evolving and de-evolving a creature keeps growth from feeling like a one-way numerical ladder, while different abilities create reasons to reconsider a party rather than simply replace it. The Digital World also gives that work an inviting setting, with creatures and locations that express a clear identity. The surrounding structure is less accommodating. A strong desire to experiment can collide with a story that controls where the player may go and how much room there is to practise. Preparing for a demanding encounter then risks becoming an interruption rather than an exciting change of plan. It remains appealing for players who enjoy the process of raising a collection, provided they are comfortable with a guided adventure and substantial preparation between its strongest moments.

Strengths

  • Evolution routes and party choices keep collection purposeful.

Weaknesses

  • Linear progression and preparation costs can interrupt experimentation.

Who it is for: Monster-raising RPG players who enjoy planning a collection over time.

Play notes: Technical judgment uses the July18 postupdate test on basePS5 and Pro. Launch-only30fps criticism is superseded by the added mode. Sample loading is not universal, and no October retest or expansion review is claimed.
