About this game

Dead Cells is a two-dimensional action game connecting repeated attempts with branching exploration. Players control a failed alchemical experiment that borrows bodies to move through a changing island. Enemies, traps and connected regions stand along the way to understanding what happened there. Weapons and abilities shape each attempt’s approach, while rolling and watching enemy actions help create openings. Some unlocked progress remains after failure, providing new routes and equipment for later attempts. The base game and separately sold expansion regions are distinct, with access depending on the content owned.

Dead Cells

Movement and equipment combinations make repetition productive, with optional assistance providing more control over the cost of failure.

The pleasure comes from discovering how one action can lead naturally into the next. Movement creates an opening, equipment determines what can be done with it, and a successful sequence makes a dangerous stretch feel briefly under control. Changing the available tools gives a familiar route another question to answer instead of asking only for faster execution. Standard runs can still require accepting an imperfect set of equipment rather than waiting for a favourite combination, so willingness to adapt matters. Repetition is most rewarding when it develops understanding as well as unlocking another item. Optional Assist settings, including continues, offer ways to adjust that learning process; failure does not have one mandatory cost for every player. The inspected PC review describes well-connected movement and forceful audiovisual feedback. Later official accessibility options give players more ways to adjust difficulty and the information presented.

Strengths

  • Movement, equipment effects and readable impact turn repeated routes into opportunities to practise new approaches.

Weaknesses

  • Standard runs can require adapting to available equipment instead of relying on a preferred build.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy practising action combinations and adapting a plan to different tools.
