About this game
Dai-3-ji Super Robot Taisen is a Super Famicom role-playing release centered on combat encounters, turn-based tactical decisions, and resource or business management. Story beats, exploration, and progression resources support a longer campaign, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on campaign length or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Characters, world building, maps, and music carry most of the atmosphere, while sprite animation, scrolling, color, and chip-based audio jointly carry readability and atmosphere. The main genre-specific friction is that dense text, menu layers, repeated battles, and language dependence can slow progress. In addition, password or battery saves, multiplayer accessories, manual dependence, regional language, and cartridge enhancement chips can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this release and excludes emulator features, modern-port conveniences, and content from other platforms.

Super Famicom / SNESAI review

Strong early robot tactics slowed by rigid original controls.
The original Super Famicom Super Robot Wars III binds pilot growth, unit upgrades, terrain and morale to a crossover campaign. Using a limited set of strong machines well makes positioning and spending matter; spreading money across favorite but weaker units can make later maps harder. Its demanding battles reward patient planning and repeated attempts. Combination scenes and robots from different series lend the 16-bit presentation personality, even without the voice acting of a later remake. Important original-release limits remain: battle animations cannot be skipped, and the player cannot freely choose a defensive response during the enemy phase. Those pauses are especially noticeable on long maps. A direct account comparing SFC and PlayStation explicitly distinguishes the remake’s weapon upgrading and other rule changes; they are not credited to this cartridge. This rating is only for the 1993 SFC release. Players who enjoy early robot tactics and resource commitment should find substance, while those expecting modern fast-forward tools and forgiving team building should be prepared for friction.
Strengths
- Terrain, morale and upgrades give decisions weight.
Weaknesses
- Demanding balance and unskippable battle scenes.
Who it is for: Classic robot-tactics fans who enjoy long-term planning.
Play notes: SFC original only; PS remake features are excluded.
