About this game
Custom Robo V2 is a Nintendo 64 role-playing game centered on combat encounters, area and route exploration, and collection and development goals. Story beats, exploration, and progression resources support a longer campaign, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Characters, world building, environments, and music carry most of the atmosphere, while 3D scenes, fog, textures, and cartridge audio need to preserve target readability within limited memory and television output. The genre-specific limitation is that dense text, menu layers, repeated battles, loading, or language dependence can slow progress. Platform conditions also include camera control, stick precision, Controller Pak saves, Rumble Pak support, Expansion Pak requirements, and four-player setup can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.
Collected in series
Custom Robo combines collecting robot parts with fast arena battles. You build a small fighting machine, then discover how its weapons and movement work together against rivals, with adventures outside the arena giving each new match a place in the story.

Customization becomes lively miniature robot combat.
Custom Robo V2 thrives on the loop between rebuilding a machine and testing it in battle. Bodies, guns, bombs and legs change movement and attack options rather than merely filling a collection, so another configuration can reveal a solution to a difficult opponent. Inside the arena, timing and evasive movement still matter: planning does not replace active decisions. Colorful robots give the world a pleasing toy-like identity, although the scenery is relatively plain. Exploring matchups with friends adds replay value, but four-player participation uses tag battles rather than four simultaneous robots. Japanese dialogue and part descriptions also require patience; understanding a fight is not the same as following the story. Clear bomb targeting and jump-dash inputs support the original N64 edition's active combat.
Strengths
- Customization directly changes tactics
- Build planning complements active combat
- Replayable local matchups
Weaknesses
- Four-player participation is tag-based
- Japanese part descriptions require learning
- Relatively plain scenery
Who it is for: Robot-customization and action-combat enthusiasts; Players willing to learn Japanese part effects
Play notes: Control evidence comes from original N64 guides and a historical review, not a current retest. Story quality is not inferred from a reviewer who could not understand its Japanese dialogue.
