About this game

Borderlands 2 is a Xbox 360 shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and area and route exploration. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while HD video, DVD streaming, surround audio, HDD installs, and television-distance interfaces need to keep action, state, and text readable. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include disc and HDD installation, storage devices, controller batteries, video connections, resolution and frame rate, Kinect space and calibration, and retired online services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

7.8 / 10Xbox 360

Strong Xbox co-op with level-gap and solo-play friction.

Borderlands 2 on Xbox 360 strengthens its familiar shoot-and-loot formula with classes such as the Gunzerker and Assassin, more useful weapon differences, and enemies that engage more aggressively. A stronger antagonist gives the many missions clearer momentum, while complementary skills make cooperative fights especially rewarding. It remains an incremental sequel, however, and the direct review finds solo balance less convincing. Matchmaking and enemy level scaling also make it difficult to join friends whose characters are many levels apart. The reviewer tested primarily on Xbox 360 for local cooperation and found dual-stick aiming adequate. Those are observations about the original console build, not a promise that Xbox Live functionality still exists today. A group progressing together will get the most from its abundant battles; solo players and groups with widely separated levels should note the friction.

Strengths

  • Classes, varied guns and team synergy.

Weaknesses

  • Level-gap matchmaking and weaker solo balance.

Who it is for: Co-op groups able to progress at similar levels.

Play notes: 2012 Xbox Live experience is not current-service proof.
