About this game
Blockara is a Wii U puzzle game centered on puzzle, maze, or device solving, story, case, or mission progress, and rule recognition. Compact stages add conditions and tighter constraints over time, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Graphics, audio, touch, or pointer feedback need to support decisions directly, while HD television output and the GamePad screen need to divide maps, status, touch input, and primary focus clearly. The genre-specific limitation is that limited explanations, input recognition, repetition, or abrupt difficulty can stall progress. Platform conditions also include GamePad battery life and range, shifts between two screens, loading, performance, and retired online and Miiverse services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

Wii UAI review

Inventive local duels in a rough fighting-game wrapper.
Blockara makes block clearing into a duel over defensive gaps. Move your rows to protect a route, fire countering blocks into the opponent's board, and send a final shot through the passage you have opened. Watching an opponent reposition and anticipating the next attack makes the concept more engaging than straightforward chain building, particularly with a friend who understands the rules. Solo AI does less with those possibilities, while the different modes mostly repeat the same framework and characters offer no mechanical distinction. Simple artwork, rough recorded dialogue and weak stories undermine the fighting-game presentation. Separate Wii U buttons for row and whole-grid movement keep board management understandable, although short loading breaks recur. Best for local puzzle rivals willing to overlook a rough audiovisual package.
Strengths
- Meaningful defensive and offensive positioning
- Engaging human-versus-human play
- Dedicated board-management inputs
Weaknesses
- Limited solo opposition
- Mechanically identical characters
- Rough artwork and voice recording
Who it is for: Players with a local puzzle rival; Competitive puzzle fans unconcerned with story
Play notes: Based on the original North American Wii U review; runtime observations are historical. No online play is assumed; an existing offline copy is assessed.
