About this game

Blast Radius is a PlayStation shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, combat encounters, and aiming and shooting. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while early 3D graphics, pre-rendered backgrounds, CD audio, and full-motion video need to preserve targets and interface readability on a television. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include disc loading, Memory Card saves, regional video standards, digital or analog control support, vibration, and dedicated peripherals affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Polished PS1 space combat with limited surprise.

Blast Radius is more an assured PlayStation space shooter than a fresh design statement. A contemporary review credits the Colony Wars engine with smooth action and precise control; brighter colors make distant enemy craft easier to pick out. Loud effects and strong sound sell the firefights, even if the same critic finds many ship shapes awkward. Link-cable cooperation and deathmatch broaden the package only for players who can supply two consoles, two copies and the cable. For everyone else, the question is whether familiar missions are enough. Fans of Psygnosis-style dogfighting can enjoy the immediate action, while players looking for a substantially new space-combat system may find little to discover.

Strengths

  • Contemporary PS1 coverage confirms responsive combat and strong audiovisual effects.

Weaknesses

  • The missions feel familiar beside Colony Wars.
  • Some ship designs struck the contemporary reviewer as awkward.

Who it is for: PS1 space-combat fans, especially those equipped for two-console link-cable play.

Play notes: Link-cable multiplayer requires two PlayStations, two copies and the cable.
