About this game

Bladestorm - The Hundred Years' War is a PlayStation 3 strategy game centered on area and route exploration, story, case, or mission progress, and battlefield assessment. Missions add map constraints, new rules, and tougher opposition, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Maps, unit states, and action feedback determine whether complex situations remain readable, while HD 3D scenes, Blu-ray data streaming, surround audio, and cinematic presentation need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that tutorial depth, dense menus, controller pointing, and long scenarios increase the learning curve. Platform conditions also include Blu-ray loading, HDD installs, system software, DualShock 3 battery life, Move accessories, resolution and frame rate, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Accessible troop action is repetitive and shallow, though PS3 is stable.

The original PS3 Bladestorm: The Hundred Years’ War casts the player as a mercenary taking charge of nearby companies of archers, pikemen and cavalry. Moving into a unit and triggering shared attacks is easy to grasp, and the massed troops suggest a promising blend of action and tactics. In practice companions follow and fight so automatically that commanding them rarely demands much strategy. Tavern contracts, equipment and troop books add preparation between battles, but missions repeatedly cross similar countryside to capture one base after another. A forced nightfall can halt a near-complete assault, making a repeated push feel arbitrary. Crowds supply scale without much clarity: a flat palette makes troop types difficult to distinguish, the minimap is too small, and effects sound thin. The direct PS3/Xbox 360 comparison is important for the technical judgment. Both versions moved well, yet the tested 360 game locked up repeatedly while PS3 ran without that issue. Stability is a real advantage for this release, not evidence that its design is deeper. It suits players who enjoy lightweight troop action despite repetition. The later Nightmare expansion is excluded.

Strengths

  • Tavern preparation and mass attacks offer a hook.

Weaknesses

  • Repeated base captures, tiny map and forced stops.

Who it is for: Fans of light mass-combat action over deep strategy.

Play notes: PS3 avoided tested 360 freezes; excludes Nightmare.
