About this game

Bakumatsu Rock - Ultra Soul is a PSP music and rhythm game centered on music, rhythm, and performance, beat recognition, and button or peripheral timing. Songs and difficulty tiers support short repeated practice, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Music, input prompts, and synchronized performance carry the appeal, while the portable widescreen, UMD streaming, compressed audio, and handheld-scale interface need to preserve targets, text, and action readability. The genre-specific limitation is that calibration, input latency, peripheral conditions, and dense charts can affect precision. Platform conditions also include single-nub camera control, UMD loading and noise, Memory Stick saves, battery life, regional language, ad hoc requirements, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

A lively rock-history encore with a smaller amount of genuinely new story.

The PSP Ultra Soul release combines the previous Bakumatsu Rock narrative with a new Perry Jr. conflict, bonus scenes and additional playable songs. The knowingly extravagant premise—musicians opposing a song-controlling shogunate—benefits from character vocals and music-video presentation. Returning players should nevertheless understand that this is an expanded package, not an entirely fresh adventure. Famitsu explicitly identifies the fourth shout-level cut-in as Vita-only, a real presentation difference rather than an assumed hardware performance gap. Marvelous also documents a clear STORY-menu Data Link procedure for importing the previous game's PSP system data and unlocking associated material; that convenience only matters to owners of an appropriate prior save. It is a better choice for Japanese-reading character and song fans than for someone seeking a large new plot. No independent PSP timing test supports claims about rhythm latency.

Strengths

  • Added songs and performances strengthen the theatrical premise.

Weaknesses

  • Much inherited story and the missing Vita-only flourish limit the upgrade.

Who it is for: Japanese-reading fans of Bakumatsu Rock music and characters.

Play notes: Prior-game import requires saved data; PSP input timing is unverified.
