About this game
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag follows Edward Kenway, a pirate pursuing wealth and adventure amid the conflict between Assassins and Templars in the Caribbean. Modern sections explore historical memories from the perspective of an Abstergo employee. On land, climbing, stealth and close combat provide ways through settlements. Sailing connects towns, islands and secluded coves. Upgrade the ship, take assassination and naval contracts, or search for treasure, shaping a journey between story missions and free exploration.
Collected in series
Assassin’s Creed turns historical settings into places to climb, explore and infiltrate. The conflict between Assassins and Templars links its adventures, while individual games shift the emphasis between stealth, seafaring and character-building RPG systems.

Assassins CreedIV Black Flag
A distinctive pirate journey with rewarding freedom, interrupted by repetitive missions and old-version friction.
Black Flag finds a distinctive theme between land-based stealth and a wider sea journey. Climbing, melee and hidden approaches retain familiar foundations, while towns, islands and coves give exploration more directions. Ship upgrades, contracts and treasure keep goals coming, and crew songs make time on the water appealing in itself. Mandatory naval missions are less consistently engaging, and tailing and collection patterns still slow the pace. The identified Xbox 360 test finds the right-bumper completion display helpful for tracking areas and basic movement and combat more cohesive. It also records unintended climbing jumps, occasional choppiness affecting navigation and a mission that needed weapons re-equipped before it would start. Players who shape their own routes and enjoy pirate life will find more to appreciate than those seeking a tightly directed campaign.
Strengths
- Connected land and sea exploration
- Strong pirate atmosphere
- Useful area-completion display
Weaknesses
- Repetitive forced missions
- Climbing and trigger friction
Who it is for: Action-adventure players drawn to Caribbean exploration, sailing and ship development.
Play notes: Independent judgment from Stephen Carter’s November 14, 2013 AVForums Xbox 360 test, not our own playtest. Model, patch and hours are unspecified. Choppiness and trigger issues are historical observations rather than universal current guarantees. Scope is original single-player content, excluding PS4, Switch, 2026 Resynced and promises about current online features.
