About this game
Age of Mythology: Retold is a PlayStation 5 strategy game centered on combat encounters, turn-based tactical decisions, and resource or business management. Missions add map constraints, new rules, and tougher opposition, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Maps, unit states, and action feedback determine whether complex situations remain readable, while SSD streaming, 4K and HDR output, 3D audio, performance or quality modes, and high-density interfaces need to preserve feedback and information clarity together. The genre-specific limitation is that tutorial depth, dense menus, controller pointing, and long scenarios increase the learning curve. Platform conditions also include install size, SSD space, patch version, DualSense battery life, visual mode and frame rate, online dependencies, PS VR2 requirements, and cross-generation version differences affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.
Collected in series
Age of Empires is a historical real-time strategy series where a growing settlement becomes the foundation of an army. Gathering resources, advancing technology and choosing when to attack all compete for your attention, making economic decisions as important as battlefield commands.

Mythic warfare offers strong strategic variety with a demanding controller learning curve.
Age of Mythology: Retold adds meaningful mythic choices to familiar economic and military planning. Gods, powers, and distinctive units make faction differences worth exploring, while campaigns and skirmishes offer both directed learning and room to experiment. Updated models and animation help sell the contrast between ordinary armies and extraordinary creatures. The console interface is a substantial part of the package: automatic villager allocation and recurring orders reduce routine work, but understanding the command structure still takes commitment. That learning cost keeps the adaptation from feeling effortless. Technical observations here come from a March 2025 PS5 Pro review and concern the interface, not a measured promise for every PS5 model. The paid Chinese expansion is excluded from the base-game content judgment.
Strengths
- Distinctive mythic units and powers
- Complementary campaigns and skirmishes
- Economic automation supports controller play
Weaknesses
- Controller commands take time to learn
- Some underlying routines remain conventional
Who it is for: RTS players interested in mythology and willing to learn controller commands.
Play notes: Practise automation and unit groups; evidence covers PS5 Pro, with paid expansions excluded.
