About this game
After Burner - Black Falcon is a PSP shooter game centered on combat encounters, story, case, or mission progress, and aiming and shooting. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while the portable widescreen, UMD streaming, compressed audio, and handheld-scale interface need to preserve targets, text, and action readability. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include single-nub camera control, UMD loading and noise, Memory Stick saves, battery life, regional language, ad hoc requirements, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.
Collected in series
After Burner is Sega's arcade aircraft-shooting series, built around rushing forward into enemy fire. Sweep targets into your sights, launch missiles and dodge attacks as the scenery races past. Speed and quick reactions drive the experience, with later games adding new ways to clear the sky or customize your aircraft.

Fast handheld action with limited variety and draw distance.
After Burner: Black Falcon reduces PSP flight to high-speed arcade shooting. On its fixed route, the player quickly distinguishes color-coded missile and rocket targets while choosing between afterburner, brakes, and a defensive barrel roll that prevents firing during the maneuver. Missions are brief, and jet unlocks, supplies dropped by destroyed formations, and changing scenery keep a few minutes of play busy. Detailed aircraft, forceful explosions, and energetic music communicate speed well. Across twenty-four missions, however, objectives do little to alter the central shooting routine. The single-player campaign is short and competitive multiplayer offers little lasting reason to return. The firsthand PSP review also observes short draw distance and occasional hitching when many enemies and explosions fill the screen; these are limitations of this handheld release. It is a good match for players wanting a compact burst of forceful shooting, less so for those seeking a detailed flight simulation or a lengthy campaign.
Strengths
- Target reading and evasive choices keep sessions lively.
Weaknesses
- Short, repetitive campaign and occasional hitching.
Who it is for: Players wanting brief arcade flight shooting.
Play notes: The 2007 PSP release only, not other After Burner games.
