About this game
Advance Wars is a Wii U simulation game centered on area and route exploration, state management, and system learning. Schedules, changing values, or staged goals encourage repeated adjustment, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Interface clarity, pose recognition, and state feedback matter more than spectacle, while HD television output and the GamePad screen need to divide maps, status, touch input, and primary focus clearly. The genre-specific limitation is that explanations, dense menus, motion recognition, real-time systems, or accessory dependencies can add friction. Platform conditions also include GamePad battery life and range, shifts between two screens, loading, performance, and retired online and Miiverse services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.
Collected in series
Advance Wars puts you in charge of a miniature army, moving tanks, infantry and aircraft one turn at a time. Capturing towns pays for reinforcements, while terrain and unit matchups turn each map into a tactical puzzle. Later campaigns add new fronts and a harsher vision of war.

Strong grid tactics made easier to revisit by Wii U restore points.
The Wii U Virtual Console release of Advance Wars preserves a remarkably clear turn-based battlefield. Infantry capture cities to grow income, while tanks, artillery and aircraft demand attention to terrain, range and counters. Commanding Officer powers can overturn a tight position at the right moment. Field Training introduces these rules before the campaign requires more deliberate resource and positioning choices. War Room challenges and a map designer leave room for practice after the story. Colorful unit icons and commander portraits help the player read a crowded grid rather than merely decorating it. On Wii U, restore points reduce the cost of a mistake in a long battle, and optional pixel smoothing lets players choose how the GBA picture appears. Neither convenience solves the tactical problem for them. This is an inviting but demanding choice for players who like to reconsider every turn; the historical Wii U release is assessed without claiming that the former eShop remains open for purchase.
Strengths
- Terrain, income and unit counters sustain meaningful choices.
Weaknesses
- Long battles still demand patience and learning.
Who it is for: Players who enjoy planning each turn.
Play notes: Historical Wii U Virtual Console release; current purchase access unverified.
