About this game
Aces of War is a PlayStation 2 simulation game centered on puzzle, maze, or device solving, state management, and system learning. Schedules, changing values, or staged goals encourage repeated adjustment, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Interface clarity and state feedback matter more than spectacle, while 3D scenes, streamed data, cinematics, surround audio, and interlaced television output need to preserve action and state readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that explanations, dense menus, real-time systems, or accessory dependencies can add friction. Platform conditions also include DVD loading, the 8MB Memory Card, analog sticks and pressure-sensitive buttons, Multitap, Network Adapter, dedicated peripherals, and retired online services affect present-day use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

PlayStation 2AI review

Engaging dogfights are repeatedly checked by fuel, handling and torpedo waits.
Aces of War crosses several World War II factions and aircraft roles, mixing fighter combat, bombing and attacks on ships. Enemy fighters extend and close rather than merely drifting into the gunsight, and basic orders let friendly planes guard the player or pursue their own targets. Five campaign chapters, custom sorties and mission ranks give repeat flights a purpose. The detailed PS2 review also identifies persistent friction. Fuel runs down quickly enough to discourage diversions, while a missed torpedo cannot be replaced until the previous one finally disappears, potentially costing minutes. Aircraft retain a floaty momentum that resists quick corrections. Either the cockpit structure or the external plane can block the bombing view. Aircraft models remain acceptable, but terrain and explosions are much weaker, and a short musical loop wears thin. There is combat worth engaging with here, provided the player can tolerate its awkward information and response during some of its most demanding tasks.
Strengths
- Enemy fighter manoeuvres make dogfights engaging.
- Campaign and custom sorties support replay.
Weaknesses
- Missed torpedoes impose long waits.
- Bombing views and aircraft inertia obstruct precision.
Who it is for: Players interested in World War II sorties despite rough handling.
Play notes: European PS2 release; PSP control observations are excluded.
