About this game
Ace Combat is a PlayStation shooter game centered on combat encounters, aiming and shooting, and positioning and evasion. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while early 3D graphics, pre-rendered backgrounds, CD audio, and full-motion video need to preserve targets and interface readability on a television. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include disc loading, Memory Card saves, regional video standards, digital or analog control support, vibration, and dedicated peripherals affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

Accessible original dogfights with shallow supporting systems.
The first Ace Combat, released as Air Combat outside Japan, already has an approachable arcade-dogfight rhythm. Basic and advanced control schemes offer different levels of manoeuvring, while radar ranges, missile-lock markers and damage indicators keep the fight legible. Eighteen relatively short missions connect through a branching map, and their payouts buy aircraft or mercenary support, so the campaign offers more direction than a simple mission list. Yet many objectives still reduce to destroying planes or static ground targets. Aircraft statistics and paid wingmen also have less practical influence than their menus suggest. Moving the aircraft marker around the mission map can be fiddly. The firsthand review covers a North American PlayStation Greatest Hits copy of the same work; it supports shared flight and interface observations, not claims about Japanese text, packaging or exact first-print behavior. This is a welcoming starting point for short-form aerial action, with less tactical depth than its supporting systems initially promise.
Strengths
- Control choices and readable radar make short sorties accessible.
Weaknesses
- Objectives repeat and aircraft or wingmen vary less than expected.
Who it is for: Players interested in the series’ approachable arcade-flight origin.
Play notes: Source tests a North American PS1 reprint, not Japanese text or first-print details.
