About this game
A Boy and His Blob is a PlayStation 4 action game centered on movement and immediate actions, enemy and hazard responses, and stage objectives. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hits, camera behavior, and readable hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while HD output, HDR or PS4 Pro modes, HDD streaming, surround audio, and television-distance interfaces need to preserve action, state, and text readability together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera behavior, collision rules, input mapping, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. Platform conditions also include HDD installs and loading, patch version, storage space, DualShock 4 battery life, PS Camera or PS VR requirements, visual modes, frame rate, and network services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.

A warm puzzle partnership limited by prescribed solutions and port faults.
The 2016 PS4 port of A Boy and His Blob still works because the boy and his white companion depend on one another. Feeding the blob different jellybeans turns it into tools for a sequence of platform puzzles, and the hand-drawn art, gentle tone and dedicated hug action make the relationship more convincing than any elaborate plot could. Forty main stages contain treasures that open additional challenge rooms. A direct PS4 revisit also finds the puzzle design less open than its premise: early signs reveal many solutions and each stage restricts the available jellybeans, leaving limited room for experimentation. Boss encounters and later sections then introduce surprisingly sharp difficulty spikes. The port moves between areas with almost no loading, but the reviewer observed intermittent lag in the jellybean menu, a shaking camera in rocket form and one incident of falling through the floor. It suits players drawn to warm visual design and approachable puzzle-platforming more than those seeking free-form solutions or an even challenge curve. This score concerns the PS4 port, not the original Wii release.
Strengths
- Transformations and hand-drawn art give the partnership warmth.
Weaknesses
- Heavy hints, difficulty spikes and occasional menu/camera issues.
Who it is for: Players who enjoy gentle art and stage-based puzzle-platforming.
Play notes: 2016 PS4 port only; Wii behavior and later fixes are not inferred.
