Nintendo’s dual-screen home console pairs HD television play with the Wii U GamePad and offers compatibility with supported Wii software.

Wii U first launched in North America on November 18, 2012 as a separate successor to Wii. It combines a home console with the screen-equipped Wii U GamePad, letting games divide information and controls between a television and the player’s hands.
The GamePad includes sticks, buttons, touch input and motion sensors. Compatible titles offer off-TV play, while others use both screens together. The console provides high-definition television output and can run compatible Wii games through Wii mode. Many Wii controllers and accessories remain useful with supported software.
The GamePad must stay within wireless range of its console; it is not a standalone handheld. Wii software still needs appropriate Wii controls, which the GamePad cannot universally replace. Regional software and accessory compatibility should be checked. New eShop purchases ended in 2023, and the main official online-play services ended in 2024.
