Overview

What this platform is

PlayStation 5, or PS5, began launching on November 12, 2020. This entry covers the home-console generation, including launch models, later slim designs and PS5 Pro, rather than one specific exterior or storage configuration.

Main features

Fast SSD storage helps reduce loading in supported games. The DualSense wireless controller provides haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, with effects determined by each title. Games come as downloads or physical discs, and the great majority of PS4 games work through backward compatibility. Image quality and frame rate depend on the game, selected mode, console model and display.

Before you play

A configuration without a disc drive cannot read physical games. The original Digital Edition cannot use the later detachable drive; compatible slim systems and PS5 Pro need the appropriate accessory. Playing a supported PS4 disc also requires a drive and the disc must remain inserted. PS3 discs are not supported. Native PS5 games normally use DualSense, so do not assume an older DualShock 4 can control them. Always check the exact hardware and game requirements.
