Overview

What this platform is

Wii first launched in North America on November 19, 2006. This Nintendo home console made motion controls a major part of television gaming, encouraging players to point, swing and move through sports, adventures and party games.

Key features

The Wii Remote can work alongside a Nunchuk, while its pointing function uses a Sensor Bar. Some games support Wii MotionPlus or a Wii Remote Plus for more detailed movement tracking. Traditional controllers and the Wii Balance Board are available for compatible software. The game determines which accessories and player arrangements are supported.

What to know before playing

Original RVL-001 hardware supports GameCube games, but some later Wii models omit that compatibility. Wii and Wii U are different systems, and a Wii cannot run Wii U games. Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection ended in 2014, so descriptions of historical internet multiplayer do not mean that service remains available. Local and single-player functions generally do not require it.
