The Super Famicom launched in Japan on November 21, 1990 as Nintendo’s successor to the Famicom. Known internationally as the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, it retained cartridge games and television play while expanding visual, audio and control possibilities.
Its controller combines a directional pad with four face buttons and two shoulder buttons. That layout supports more actions in platformers, fighting games and role-playing adventures. The machine is especially associated with detailed two-dimensional games; scaling effects and additional cartridge hardware enabled other distinctive visual techniques. Two controller ports support local play, with extra accessories needed for certain larger groups.
Japanese, North American and European hardware differs in case design, cartridge shape and video standards. Check the actual region and model instead of assuming every SNES or SFC cartridge and cable is interchangeable. Famicom cartridges do not work directly. Save support varies by game, and modern displays may need suitable video equipment.
