About this game
Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a PlayStation 5 shooter game centered on aiming, shooting, and weapon use, positioning and evasion, and weapon and firepower management. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while SSD streaming, 4K and HDR output, 3D audio, performance or quality modes, and high-density interfaces need to preserve feedback and information clarity together. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and peripheral support can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include install size, SSD space, patch version, DualSense battery life, visual mode and frame rate, online dependencies, PS VR2 requirements, and cross-generation version differences affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features or conveniences from remasters, emulators, or other console editions.
Collected in series
Warhammer games bring Games Workshop’s fantasy and science-fiction worlds into strategy, role-playing and action. Some put you in command of armies, while others take you into close combat alongside a small team, so the experience depends strongly on the branch you choose.

PlayStation 5AI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
Weighty shooting delivers, although long encounters exhaust its momentum.
Boltgun translates the Space Marine fantasy into forceful shooting and close-range chainsword attacks. Sound, pixel effects and movement make advancing more satisfying than simply emptying magazines from a distance. The PS5 test finds direct controls after sensitivity adjustment, while controller vibration reinforces impacts. Its main limitation is pacing: lengthy levels repeat waves, and durable enemies sometimes turn an aggressive push into a prolonged exchange. Players drawn to retro shooters and heavy Warhammer weaponry have a clear reason to try it, but should not expect equally inventive encounters throughout every long level. This assessment covers the May 2023 base campaign and does not count later downloadable expansions or imply a retest of every update.
Strengths
- Strong weapon feedback.
- Direct aggressive combat.
Weaknesses
- Repetitive long levels.
- Durable enemies slow momentum.
Who it is for: Retro-shooter players interested in heavy weapons and forward pressure.
Play notes: Historical PS5 base campaign; later expansions excluded.
