About this game
Skylanders - Imaginators is a Wii U action game centered on movement and immediate actions, enemy and hazard responses, and stage objectives. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Animation, hits, camera behavior, and readable hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while HD television output and the GamePad screen need to divide maps, status, touch input, and primary focus clearly. The genre-specific limitation is that camera behavior, collision rules, input mapping, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. Platform conditions also include GamePad battery life and range, shifts between two screens, loading, performance, and retired online and Miiverse services affect the current release. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

Joyful character creation hampered by the Wii U build.
Skylanders Imaginators' Wii U edition retains the series' accessible action-platforming, but its strongest reason to return is making a hero through a Creation Crystal. Body parts, powers, voice and personality details can be combined into a character that feels personally owned. Earlier Skylanders figures remain playable, so an existing collection still has value. The adventure itself is less exciting: the Wii U review describes a brisk ten-stage main path and a more guided flow than the previous entry. Ten Sensei realms and other areas expand the map only if the corresponding physical toys are owned, a major qualification for any content count. Platform-specific shortcomings are equally important. Nintendo World Report found muddy graphics, recurring hitches, long loads and a sluggish character editor on Wii U. Those interruptions hurt both ordinary exploration and the release's signature new feature. Humorous encounters and reliable basic combat remain, but this is a technically compromised way to enjoy them. No performance judgment is borrowed from other consoles.
Strengths
- Excellent character creation.
- Older figures retain use.
Weaknesses
- Wii U hitches and long loading.
- Extra realms require more toys.
Who it is for: Wii U families already invested in Skylanders figures.
Play notes: A compatible portal and toys are required; online status is unverified.
