About this game

A rookie police officer and a visitor searching for her brother arrive in a city overwhelmed by a biological disaster. Leon and Claire’s routes lead through the police station and beyond, where finding a key or opening a passage changes how familiar rooms connect. Exploration, puzzles and combat compete for attention. An enemy in a corridor matters because returning through that corridor may be necessary later. The remake’s close camera keeps threats near, while the two protagonists offer different perspectives on the crisis. This entry refers to the modern remake rather than the original 1998 game.

Collected in series

Resident Evil follows people trying to survive biological disasters, combining dangerous exploration, puzzles and encounters with hostile creatures. Each game finds a different balance between fear and action, with fixed, over-the-shoulder and first-person perspectives changing how you face the danger.

Resident Evil 2

An excellent horror remake whose spaces reward sustained attention.

The strongest quality here is how exploration keeps a consequence. Remembering a route is useful, yet returning to it never feels entirely safe; the police station becomes something to understand rather than merely clear. That relationship between familiarity and uncertainty gives combat and puzzle solving a common purpose. The two protagonists and extra survival challenges also make another visit more appealing than a simple repeat of the same events. Its demands are deliberate: players who want constant forward action may find the need to retrace and reassess less immediate. For those willing to observe their surroundings, however, this is a remarkably coherent horror adventure. The Switch2 edition’s presentation and technical limits are assessed separately below, rather than borrowing an older platform’s score.

Strengths

  • Meaningful route planning and strong replay structure.

Weaknesses

  • Retracing spaces asks for patience; handheld imagery has minor compromises.

Who it is for: Players who enjoy careful exploration and sustained horror.

Play notes: Based on the October13 North American Switch2 review in both modes; patch unspecified. Reported target performance is not an all-scenes lock. No gyro aiming.
