Superb duels carry an unevenly paced adventure.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword earns its strongest recommendation through close-range combat. Reading an attack, parrying it and exploiting the opening produces a clear sense of earned mastery, especially during boss encounters. Musashi's expressive movements give those exchanges personality rather than reducing them to damage calculations. The supernatural setting strengthens that identity. The surrounding adventure is less consistent: repeated ordinary enemies and uneven difficulty interrupt the momentum between its highlights. Base PS5 performance-mode observations are encouraging for precise inputs, although they are not a guarantee of a flawless frame rate in every situation. Choose it for demanding swordplay and memorable duels, while expecting a less disciplined journey between them.
Strengths
- Rewarding parry-driven combat
- Expressive combat animation
Weaknesses
- Limited ordinary-enemy variety
- Uneven difficulty and pacing
Who it is for: Players who enjoy reading attacks and demanding boss duels.
Play notes: Technical observations concern base PS5 performance mode, not a hands-on test by this site.
