About this game

NHL Breakaway 99 is a Nintendo 64 sports game centered on sport controls, shifts between attack and defense, and score or tournament goals. Matches, challenges, and tournament goals give sessions clear boundaries, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Players, venues, motion recognition, and score feedback establish the match atmosphere, while 3D scenes, fog, textures, and cartridge audio need to preserve target readability within limited memory and television output. The genre-specific limitation is that opponent ai, control precision, motion recognition, and period-specific rosters can affect consistency. Platform conditions also include camera control, stick precision, Controller Pak saves, Rumble Pak support, Expansion Pak requirements, and four-player setup can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

6.4 / 10Nintendo 64

A feature-complete N64 hockey sequel, held back by modest presentation and too little progress over its predecessor.

Acclaim's NHL Breakaway 99 is a separate Nintendo 64 hockey game from EA's NHL 99. It retains the basic pleasures of passing, shooting, defending and selecting tactics, while team management gives a season player decisions beyond each rush up the rink. The manual documents exhibition games, seasons, playoffs, an international tournament, shootouts and practice; local multiplayer is another useful reason to revisit the cartridge. That breadth makes it more substantial than a one-mode arcade sports game. Its weakness is the annual-sequel proposition. Contemporary feature material emphasizes updated rosters and rules, and a firsthand N64 review finds the graphics ordinary and the advance over Breakaway 98 difficult to see. The old menus, coaching options and sport-specific rules also require investment before a newcomer appreciates the match flow. None of this makes it a broken hockey game: there is enough structure for fans to run a season or challenge friends. It simply offers a serviceable period sports package rather than a compelling new benchmark, especially for anyone who already owns the earlier Breakaway.

Strengths

  • Passing, shooting and coaching form a full hockey loop.
  • Season, playoff, shootout and practice modes add breadth.
  • Local multiplayer gives it a social use.

Weaknesses

  • Limited visible progress over Breakaway 98.
  • The graphics are functional rather than memorable.
  • Old menus and hockey systems can deter newcomers.

Who it is for: N64 hockey fans seeking a traditional season or local matches.

Play notes: Only Acclaim's N64 NHL Breakaway 99 is rated; EA's NHL 99 is a different game.
