About this game
NBA Jam 2000 is a Nintendo 64 sports game centered on sport controls, shifts between attack and defense, and score or tournament goals. Matches, challenges, and tournament goals give sessions clear boundaries, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Players, venues, motion recognition, and score feedback establish the match atmosphere, while 3D scenes, fog, textures, and cartridge audio need to preserve target readability within limited memory and television output. The genre-specific limitation is that opponent ai, control precision, motion recognition, and period-specific rosters can affect consistency. Platform conditions also include camera control, stick precision, Controller Pak saves, Rumble Pak support, Expansion Pak requirements, and four-player setup can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.
Collected in series
NBA Jam is best known for arcade basketball with outrageous dunks, quick passes and exuberant commentary. Its signature two-on-two games turn a scoring streak into an on-fire surge, though some entries explore five-on-five simulation instead.

Nintendo 64AI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A broad N64 basketball package that never quite excels at either of its two games.
NBA Jam 2000 packs exaggerated two-on-two arcade basketball and more conventional five-on-five play into one Nintendo 64 cartridge. Movement, shooting and passing respond well enough, with icon and directional passing choices. The simulation side has seasons, play-calling, statistics and roster management; custom teams, a three-point contest and licensed NBA teams enlarge the package further. That breadth is convenient, but neither half develops the authority of a game designed around one basketball style. The computer's defense can be repeatedly beaten in the paint, while the arcade action lacks the sustained energy of more focused rivals. Player models are merely adequate for the machine, animation transitions can jump visibly and the commentary soon repeats itself. This is not an unplayable experiment, and a player who wants both modes on one cartridge can find value. Anyone seeking either the sharpest arcade contest or a convincing five-on-five simulation has better alternatives. The assessment is specific to NBA Jam 2000, not the preceding NBA Jam 99.
Strengths
- Two styles of basketball on one cartridge
- Many teams, modes and customization options
Weaknesses
- Neither mode stands above focused competitors
- Exploitable AI, choppy animation and repetitive commentary
Who it is for: N64 owners who want a casual mix of arcade and league basketball.
Play notes: This is the 2000 N64 game, not NBA Jam 99.
