About this game
Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits - Volume 1 is a Nintendo 64 shooter game centered on aiming and shooting, positioning and evasion, and weapon and firepower management. Missions pace progress through enemy waves, routes, objectives, and weapon opportunities, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on length, sales, or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Aiming feedback, projectiles, hits, and danger zones need to remain readable, while 3D scenes, fog, textures, and cartridge audio need to preserve target readability within limited memory and television output. The genre-specific limitation is that camera turning, aiming methods, dense encounters, and multiplayer service conditions can increase control pressure. Platform conditions also include camera control, stick precision, Controller Pak saves, Rumble Pak support, Expansion Pak requirements, and four-player setup can affect original-hardware use. This description covers only this platform release and does not import features from other editions.

Six worthwhile arcade games in a convenient but bare and imperfect N64 conversion.
Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits Volume 1 puts Defender, Joust, Robotron: 2084, Sinistar, Spy Hunter and Root Beer Tapper on one Nintendo 64 cartridge. Their different rhythms of shooting, avoidance and quick decision-making make the package easy to return to for short score attempts. Moving among six recognizable arcade rulesets is its principal attraction. The compilation itself does little curatorial work: historical material, extra modes and contextual presentation are sparse. N64-specific reviews also find that parts of the audio, visuals or controls do not fully reproduce the arcade machines. Access to a classic is not identical to an exact preservation of it. This rating therefore credits the durable play of the included works and the convenience of one cartridge, while deducting for conversion compromises and a thin wrapper. It does not borrow the lineup or technical behavior of another platform's Midway compilation. Players chiefly interested in arcade authenticity should weigh the port's limitations against the value of easy home access.
Strengths
- Six distinct short-session arcade challenges
- Convenient access to notable early classics
Weaknesses
- Sparse museum-style extras
- Some N64 audiovisual and control compromises
Who it is for: Nintendo 64 players who enjoy score-chasing arcade history.
Play notes: N64 edition specifically; other compilation lineups may differ.
