About this game
Gex - Enter the Gecko is a Game Boy Color action release centered on platform movement and landing judgment, area and route exploration, and movement and immediate actions. Stages build pressure through routes, enemy patterns, and changing objectives, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on campaign length or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Readable animation, hits, and hazards determine whether feedback remains dependable, while color choices need to distinguish characters, objects, and routes rather than serve as decoration alone. The main genre-specific friction is that period-specific collision rules, limited guidance, and repeated ground after failure can raise the entry barrier. In addition, battery saves, link cables, cartridge-specific hardware, the unlit display, and regional language can affect the original experience. This description covers only this release and excludes emulator features, modern-port conveniences, and content from other platforms.
Collected in series
Gex is a comic platform-adventure series starring a wisecracking gecko lost in television-inspired worlds. You jump through genre parodies, swat enemies with your tail and search for secrets, with the original's 2D stages giving way to 3D exploration in the sequels.

A charming collection-focused adaptation burdened by control and password friction.
This handheld adaptation turns Gex back into a side-scrolling explorer, with remote controls rewarding hidden collections, boss victories and timed bonus stages. Several objectives share each level, so an exploratory detour can complete a task you were not initially pursuing. Tail attacks, bouncing and catching flies preserve the character's lively identity, although wall-climbing has too few interesting uses. Colourful enemies, comic failure animations and music matched to horror or martial-arts channels make the television setting appealing. The bigger problem is maintaining a comfortable rhythm: jumps can respond late, enemies sometimes appear unexpectedly nearby, and resuming progress requires carefully copying elaborate directional and coloured arrow passwords. There is worthwhile collecting here, but players prioritising precise platforming and convenient recovery should approach its charms with those frustrations in mind.
Strengths
- Overlapping objectives and hidden remotes reward exploration.
- Comic animation and channel-specific music give the adaptation personality.
Weaknesses
- Late jumps, sudden enemy appearances and elaborate passwords interrupt play.
Who it is for: Collection-oriented platform players willing to record complex passwords.
Play notes: This is the separate 2D Game Boy Color adaptation, not the console 3D game; record password colours and directions carefully.
