About this game
Gegege no Kitarou - Youkai Souzoushu Arawaru! is a Game Boy role-playing release centered on character or equipment growth, area exploration, and combat and party setup. Story beats, exploration, and progression resources support a longer campaign, with progress divided into stages, tasks, matches, or growth milestones that make its immediate goals understandable. Its value depends on whether these rules continue to create judgment and room for mastery rather than on campaign length or series recognition. Short campaigns are judged by repeat-challenge value, while longer ones are judged by variety, pacing, and recovery after failure. Characters, world building, maps, and music carry most of the atmosphere, while silhouettes, contrast, and audio cues need to remain clear on the monochrome display. The main genre-specific friction is that dense text, menu layers, repeated battles, and language dependence can slow progress. In addition, password or battery saves, link-cable requirements, display blur, manual dependence, and regional language can affect use of the original cartridge today. This description covers only this release and excludes emulator features, modern-port conveniences, and content from other platforms.
Collected in series
GeGeGe no Kitaro games bring Kitaro and his yokai world into adventures and unusual supernatural competitions. The adaptations span different kinds of play, from using familiar powers in action stages to competing in sports that could only happen among yokai.

Game Boy (GB)AI review
AI reviews are subjective assessments, not player ratings. See each review for its evidence and limitations.Published date:
A folklore-rich Game Boy RPG whose familiar collecting loop and opaque health display limit its polish.
The original Game Boy GeGeGe no Kitarou RPG follows four story chapters rather than presenting only a monster checklist. A detailed Japanese retrospective documents a party of up to five yokai, special techniques, and companions recruited through events or specific encounters. Familiar characters receive bespoke portraits, helping the folklore setting remain recognizable on a monochrome screen. The same review finds the party, encyclopedia, and battle structure conspicuously close to Pokemon, with rougher balance and a relatively compact main story. An extra dungeon and carry-over play after completion provide some extension. Usability is mixed: auto-running eases travel, but exact health values are hidden and healing-item descriptions are imprecise. These judgments come from accessible written GB accounts. The previously discovered video was not watched and is not used as evidence. Fans of Kitarou or early portable collection RPGs have the strongest reason to try it.
Strengths
- Recruitable familiar yokai give the party a recognizable identity.
- Four chapters and an extra dungeon add directed progression.
Weaknesses
- The systems are derivative and health information is opaque.
